ELECTORAL COLLEGE: In January 1789 each of the 11 states that had passed the Constitution sent electors to choose the first president. These delegates formed a group called the electoral college which is a body of electors who represent each state's vote in chooshing the president. The electoral college selected Washington unanimoulsy, and John Adams became his vice president.
ORGANIZING THE GOVERNMENT: As president, George Washington wrote a letter to James Madison which stated, "The first of everything in our situation will serve to establish a precedent." A precedent is an action or decision that later serves as an example. Congress created departments in the executive branch for different areas of national polocy. Washington created the first cabinet.
REMAINING NEUTRAL: Since the French helped the U.S. in the American Revolution, the French asked the U.S. to help them in the French Revolution. George Washinton did not want to mess up the relationship they had with the British, so George Washington created the Neutrality Proclamation which stated that the United States would take sides with any European countries that were at war
JAY AND PINCKNEY'S TREATY: After the American Revolution the U.S.did not want to get in another war with the Britishso they created Jay's Treaty. In November 1794 the two sides signed the Treaty. Jay's Treaty settled the disputes that had arisen between the U.S. and Great Britain. In October 1795 Goday agreed to Pinckney's treaty. Pinckneys Treaty is the treaty that settled the border and trade disputes with spain
CONFLICT IN THE NORTHWEST TERRITORY: In 1790 a Native American alliance under the command of Miami chief Little Turtle defeated U.S. forces under General Josian Harmar. Then in 1791 Native Americans defeated General Arthur St. Clair's troops. On August 20, 1794 Native Americans fought Waynes troops in the Battle of Fallen Timbers and they were defeated. In August 1794 Native American leaders signed the signed the Treaty of Greenville. The U.S. claimed most of the Indian lands in the Northwest Territory.
WHISKEY'S REBELLION: The Whiskey Rebellion was a tax protest in the United States beginning in 1791 during the presidency of George Washington.The Complaints of Western Pennyslvanians were at first expressed peacfully but by 1794 fighting had broken out. In what became known as Whisky's Rebellion.
WHASHINGTON SAYS FAREWELL: In 1796 Washington decided not to run for president. He also wanted to remind America that the leaders of the country were the people. With the help of Alexander Hamilton and James madison, Washington wrote is farewell adress. In it, he spoke about what he believed were the greatest dangers to America. Some of these dangers were foreign ties and political conflictat home. Washington warned America againts forming ties with other countries because choosing sides could drwaw the U.S into war. He also warned about growing political conflict within the nation and too much public debt.
